Murphy – More than 40 kids took part in a four-day youth football camp Monday through Thursday at Murphy High School.
The Bulldogs football program organized the camp, as head coach David Gentry and his staff, along with several Murphy players, instructed participants ages 7 through ninth-grade on the game’s fundamentals. Campers learned proper blocking and tackling techniques, as well as some of the finer points of playing skill positions such as defensive back, quarterback and wide receiver.
Coaches and players also tried to prepare campers for future football combines by emulating the drills, timed running trials and other agility tests players may encounter at the high school, college and professional levels.
“Football is one of the only games you can be successful at by simply trying as hard as you can,” Gentry said to campers following Thursday’s final session on the practice field at Murphy High.
“As long as you leave everything you got on the field, you’ll have a chance to do something in this sport,” he added.
Standout performers in each of the camp’s four divisions received the Mr. Camper, Bulldog and Mr. Hustle awards. The Mr. Camper award – the camp’s top honor – went to Patrick Allen, Davis Gentry, Matthew Lovingood and Kyle McKellar.
The Bulldog award is given to the kid in each division who showed the most spirit during the camp. Miohn Allen, Ray Carroll, Erik Rollins and Brandon Stiles each won the award in their respective divisions.
Robert Coleman, Houston Daniels, Jessie Gibby, Tripp Ledford and Quinton Richarme were named Mr. Hustle. Daniels and Ledford shared the honor in their division.
