Murphy – The Murphy High School Bulldogs will get a glimpse of the season to come this week, as they will participate in two scrimmages in three days this week.
Picked by NCPreps.com to win the Smoky Mountain Conference and ranked fourth in the state in the preseason polls, Murphy will be tested right off the bat.
First up on the agenda is a trip to A.C. Reynolds tonight, to face Asheville High School in a 75-minute scrimmage. The contest will take place as part of a six-team jamboree and will start at 6:30 p.m.
Asheville, a 3A school that often contends in the playoffs, has a new head coach in David Burdette. The Cougars will be switching this year to the spread offense from their familiar Multiple-I.
According to the Asheville Citizen-Times, Asheville defensive end Andrew Leota has been offered a scholarship by Virginia Tech University despite being just a rising junior.
The Cougars, who lost an opening-round playoff game in 3AA last season to Weddington, open the season with an opponent familiar to the Bulldogs, as they take on Franklin on Friday, Aug. 19.
This Friday, the Bulldogs will once again load up to travel for a scrimmage. The journey will take Murphy to Chatsworth, Ga., to face the North Murray High School Mountaineers, who went 4-6 last year and are a 3A team in Georgia. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
